Reaching Termessos involved a scenic drive, followed by a decision – the easy route or the adventurous one. We opted for the challenge, a 150-meter climb on a rocky path that got our hearts pumping and legs burning. But the reward was worth every step.

As we emerged onto the upper plateau, the ruins sprawled out before us, a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Pisidian people. The magnificent theater, carved into the hillside, offered stunning views of the surrounding valley. We could almost imagine the roar of the crowd as plays and gladiatorial contests unfolded centuries ago.

We wandered through the Agora, the ancient marketplace, picturing bustling trade routes and the daily lives of the Termessians. The imposing Hadrian’s Arch stood guard, a symbol of the city’s eventual absorption into the Roman Empire.

Cave Karatas & Canine Companions: A Day Beyond Termessos

The journey back from the awe-inspiring Termessos Ruins wasn’t a straight shot. Instead, we took a detour that turned into a delightful adventure, blending nature and furry friends. Our first stop was Cave Karatas, a hidden wonder nestled on the way to Alena’s dog kennel.

Intriguingly, the entrance to the cave wasn’t your typical dramatic opening in the mountainside. It was located right through a charming restaurant where we planned to grab a light lunch! This unexpected combination added a touch of intrigue to our day.

Cave exploration first! Before indulging in Turkish delights, we ventured into the cool depths of the cave. A small entrance fee granted us access, and stepping through a hidden doorway behind the restaurant, we found ourselves in a dramatic opening leading into the heart of the Taurus Mountains. The air grew noticeably cooler, a welcome change from the afternoon sun.

The cavernous interior of Cave Karatas unfolded like a labyrinth of passages. Some were low and narrow, requiring a bit of an adventurous spirit to navigate. We marveled at the incredible rock formations and the sheer size of the cave system, legend even whispering of star-crossed lovers who once found refuge here.

After our subterranean exploration, we emerged back into the sunshine, invigorated and ready for a delicious lunch at the restaurant. Refueled and refreshed, we were prepped for the heartwarming visit to Alena’s dog kennel, where furry friends awaited with wagging tails and playful spirits!
