Arkansas River
Fresh off yesterday’s (June 22nd) kayaking adventure on the Arkansas River, and let me tell you, it was an experience we won’t soon forget! I joined my intrepid crew – Pavel, Halka, and Jana – for a 9-mile paddle from Pathfinder Park in Florence, Colorado, all the way down to the cement mill by the bridge. The skies were mostly cloudy, and the water levels were high, adding a touch of challenge (and maybe a dash of surprise) to the day.

Pavel Takes a (Literal) Plunge:
Things got interesting right off the bat. Poor Pavel lost his kayak at the very beginning of the trip – it just slipped away into the current, never to be seen again. While he vented his frustration back at the car (kayaking solo wasn’t exactly in the plans!), the rest of us set off on our journey.
Calm Waters, High Spirits (and a Little Bit of Shade):
Despite the cloudy skies, the scenery along the river was beautiful. The high water levels presented a slightly different perspective, but the tranquility of the flowing water and the camaraderie of our little crew kept our spirits high. We paddled along, enjoying the chance to chat, soak up the (filtered) sunshine, and appreciate the natural beauty around us.
A Flip, a Float, and a Triumphant Finish:
Of course, no kayaking adventure is complete without a little bit of excitement. In our case, that excitement came in the form of a well-timed (or perhaps not-so-well-timed) flip! Martin (that’s me!) and Halka managed to capsize our kayak, sending us and all our gear into the refreshing (and slightly chilly) waters of the Arkansas. Thankfully, Jana, ever the quick thinker, managed to snag our paddles and the cooler before they could follow suit. We might have lost our heads and sunglasses to the river gods, but luckily, we emerged from the ordeal safe and sound, albeit a little wetter for the wear.

Shaken but Not Stirred:
Despite the little mishaps, we all made it safely to the end of the route, a little shaken but mostly triumphant. The experience reminded us of the importance of teamwork (thanks Jana!), a sense of humor (especially important after a dunk!), and the sheer joy of spending time on the water with good friends. Sure, Pavel might still be searching for his kayak online (sorry buddy!), but the memories we made paddling down the Arkansas River together will definitely stay afloat.
Until next adventure,
Martin
